China Earthquake 2008 Information. Up to 80000 people - an official number was never released - died in the rubble of the quake. This study examines chronic medical needs during the acute phase after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. In China the quake is known as the Wenchuan earthquake after the county in which the epicentre was located. The earthquake could be felt 58 of kilometres away.
Information on physical social and public health preparedness was collected in predesigned templates. Disasters caused by earthquake-induced landslides and rock avalanches formed an important portion of the total earthquake effects and casualties. 20000 more were missing and about 300000 were injured. Almost 90000 people were counted as dead or missing and presumed dead in the final Chinese government assessment with nearly 375000 injured by falling debris and building collapses. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Wei River Valley in the Shaanxi Province near the cities of Huaxian Weinan and Huayin.
